After lots of late nights and hours of stakeholder meetings, you’ve finally had your project to modernise your application signed off. It’s no secret that hiring is one of the biggest challenges for IT leaders, and over the next 4+ weeks you’ll embark on a trying journey to hire ‘the one’.
It’s always been at the back of your mind that you don’t have anyone in the company that has the depth of experience or knowledge to lead the project. You’ve factored this in as part of your strategy, and the thought of bringing in new blood, new energy, new skills and expertise into the team is exciting!
Over the next few days and weeks, you’ll transition through phases 2, 3 and 4. In the early days, the job advert will attract hundreds of applications, many will proclaim masterful status in the art of cloud-centric containerisation, and DevSecOps projects. You’ll spend hours in interviews with those who make through the first gate.
After a few fruitless rounds, your approach is reflective. You will then work with the recruitment team to make tweaks to the job advert - they may even go on an aggressive headhunting expedition. Sweeteners might be added to the package in the hope of reeling in the right candidate.
When you reach phase 5, you are left wondering if you've set the bar too high? After all, you want those on the project team to possess the right skills and attitude to make your project a success. No one can be blamed for having high expectations.
Too much time has passed and you need to start your project ASAP. You and the team decide to compromise and just pick "the best from the bunch'. It really is a coin toss, it might work out well or the skills-gaps could put your project in serious risk.
The fortunate few will land their ideal candidate before getting to Phases 5 and 6.
Unfortunately, many won’t have the luck of the draw, too much time will have passed, and competitors will have had the time to close the gap.
Is there a better way? Where is your application modernisation project at this point?
